West Valley Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL)

Back in the late 1920's, the JACL was formed to oppose fierce anti-Asian sentiment that existed at the time. The JACL continues to be a champion of civil rights and to oppose racial discrimination, hate crimes, "glass ceilings", etc.

The West Valley JACL Chapter of the JACL was founded in 1970 and is composed of three groups: Main Chapter, Senior Club, and Next Generation. The major funding sources for the programs offered by the West Valley JACL comes from the annual Daruma Festival and other benefit fund-raisers.The West Valley JACL is a non-profit public benefit corporation in the State of California and has Section 501(c)(3) status under the United States Internal Revenue Code.

West Valley JACL Next Generation

In the spring of 1991, a group of South Bay young adults gathered with the main chapter of the West Valley JACL to discuss the needs of today's generation. The desire of the West Valley JACL members was to introduce the future generations to the activities of the JACL so that they may have an increased awareness and involvement in the organization. In their discussions, they discovered that they shared many of the same desires of being able to serve the community, to learn more about the Japanese American and Japanese culture, and to have the opportunity to come together to enjoy social activities. This resulted in the formation of the West Valley JACL Next Generation - an organization that would balance community service, cultural awareness, and social gatherings to fit into the busy lives of young adults.

Mission Statement

"Next Generation encourages the involvement of young people in the Japanese American community and helps preserve our unique heritage for the appreciation of future generations."
